What is Nadcap ?

Known formerly as the National Aerospace and Defense Contractors Accreditation Program, Nadcap is an industry managed approach to assess the conformity of special processes that consolidate technical expertise from suppliers, contractors and government representatives to collectively establish requirements for the approval of suppliers using a standardised procedure. Nadcap approval is granted only according to industry consensus, in contrast to how approval is given to other traditional third party programs.

Nadcap History

Before the establishment of Nadcap, aerospace companies used to audit their own suppliers through their own process requirements to verify compliance. The processes the suppliers were delivering to their customers were often identical or similar. Hence, the customer requirements were comparable.
As a result, the duplicate audits were redundant and put a burden on everyone’s workload without any added value. For the aerospace contractors, performing their own audits resulted in duplication of effort, unnecessary administration, redundant audits and higher costs for literally no value.
A U.S. Government/Industry Equal Partners Conference suggested a consensus solution to the duplication of process control system audits by the suppliers. Subsequently, the Performance Review Institute (PRI) was incorporated to administer the Nadcap program.

History of the AS Series of Standards

AS 9100 replaced the previous aerospace quality management system, AS 9000. The replacement of AS 9000 occurred because of the development and review of the ISO 9000 family of standards.
The AS 9100 standard was developed by representatives from the aerospace industry in the USA, Europe, Asia, and the Americas. Certification to AS 9100 is encouraged for suppliers to renowned organizations such as Boeing, Rolls Royce, Northrop Grumman, Lockheed Martin, GEAE, and NASA.
AS 9110 and AS 9120 standards focus on the quality requirements of the maintenance and stockist distributor segments in the aerospace industry.

How Nadcap Works

Nadcap program is discharged by the PRI institute. It will schedule an audit and allocate an approved auditor against an industry-agreed standard selected through an industry-agreed checklist. After the audit, any non-conformity issues will be highlighted and accordingly a few non-conformance reports will be issued. PRI will then issue the closing of the nonconformance reports and, upon completion, will hand over the completed audit package to a ‘special process’ task group consisting of industry members who will review it and vote on its readiness for approval. Accreditation is granted only after all the nonconformances are closed.

Only the best organisations in the global aerospace supply chain get Nadcap accreditation. Nadcap audits are strict technical assessments of compliance to industry standards and customer requirements that are conducted by industry experts.

The Nadcap audit and accreditation process is designed to gain benefits from industry input at various critical points while reducing customer workload wherever possible. Industry representatives make all the key decisions on the processes that require audits and the suppliers who are compliant to get Nadcap accreditation.

Prerequisite for Nadcap accreditation

In case of the manufacturer, they should have a valid AS 9100 quality system or get an Aerospace Quality Systems (AQS) accreditation from PRI. In case of the Testing Labs, they should have a valid ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation or get an AC 7006 accreditation from PRI.

Steps for receiving Nadcap accreditation

1. Visit the www.eauditnet.com website. Register and get the applicable audit checklists.
2. Do the GAP analysis and come up with an action plan for GAP
3. Review the already existing processes, documents and updates inline with the Nadcap Audit Criteria
4. Perform the job audit and take the necessary corrective action
5. Obtain the quote for Nadcap Audit
6. Schedule the Nadcap Audit
7. Pay the audit fees
8. Conduct the NadcapAudit
9. Closure of nonconformances in case of any
10. PRI grants the accreditation

What added value does Nadcap offer?

The Nadcap program offers the opportunity for suppliers to get strict controls within their special processes, developing a forum for a voice in the establishment of audit requirements, networking, and market recognition.

The Nadcap program offers accreditation for special processes in the aerospace and defense industry for the following,

  • Aerospace Quality Systems (AQS)
  • Coatings (CT)
  • Chemical Processing (CP)
  • Composites (COMP)
  • Conventional Machining as a Special Process (CMSP)
  • Electronics (ETG)
  • Elastomer Seals (SEAL)
  • Fluids Distribution (FLU)
  • Heat Treating (HT)
  • Measurement & Inspection (M&I)
  • Materials Testing Laboratories (MTL)
  • Metallic Materials Manufacturing (MMM)
  • Non-destructive Testing (NDT)
  • Non-metallic Materials Manufacturing (NMMM)
  • Non-metallic Materials Testing (NMMT)
  • Non-conventional Machining and Surface Enhancement (NMSE)
  • Welding (WLD)
  • Sealants (SLT)

According to your business strategy and customer requirements, you have to select the applicable audit criteria and implement the requirements.
